Becoming Superhuman – The Performance Pyramid

A client’s mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health must make up the foundation for any performance model.

Medical doctors and allied health professionals who treat clients for ‘pain and dysfunction’ without first satisfying the baseline health level are less likely to achieve a successful outcome.

Once the ‘foundations’ of the Pyramid are satisfied (Health & Pain/Dysfunction) the individual can then be mentored to move up the levels of the pyramid. Just like stepping up the rungs of a ladder.

The Performance Pyramid

Man climbing ladderWhat makes our ‘Pain and Dysfunction’ practitioners unique at Effortless Superhuman (ES) is their ability to mentor their clients and provide advice that not only helps alleviate their pain and symptoms, but also enhances their quality of life. And this means helping them progress right through to the top of the pyramid – human performance.

We see ourselves as Human Performance Specialists

All of our practitioners have extensive knowledge in the area of holistic healing: Chiropractic or physiotherapy qualifications, dry needling, strength & conditioning qualifications, movement therapy, soft tissue therapies, nutrition and functional diagnostics, holistic lifestyle coaching and supplementation.

In the context of this pyramid, ‘human performance’ is used to represent performance in all its capacities. What does this mean for you?

  • As a mother or father
  • As a CEO or top-level management
  • At work or in your chosen profession
  • Performance as a competing athlete or ‘weekend warrior’
  • As a husband, wife or partner
  • As a friend
  • Within your immediate family
  • Within your community

All of our practitioners have the ability to mentor our clients right to the top of the performance pyramid.

Why the name Effortless Superhuman?

‘Superhuman’ refers to the incredible potential that humans have within them. And not just for health and healing but in all capacities of their lives.

So many of these abilities are achievable when you have the right strategies in place and you know how to fast-track your results.

Our role at ES is to make high-performance and becoming Superhuman as Effortless as possible.

In the context of the Performance Pyramid, there are so many ways in which becoming ‘Superhuman’ can be made more ‘Effortless’.

Consider the following examples.

Health

  •  Is there one simple (physical) test that can predict your risk of dying prematurely? People who score well on this test have a 21% lower risk of all-cause mortality.
  • Cold water therapy (cold showers and cold-water immersion) may reduce your risk for developing colds, the flu, and certain types of cancer.
  • Turmeric, a natural antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory has been shown to speed up wound healing and is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Turmeric has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.
  • The Wim Hof method (third eye meditation + cyclic hyperventilation followed by breath retention + immersions in ice cold water) has been shown to have a profound effect on the human immune system, and may have important implications for the treatment of conditions associated with chronic inflammation, such as autoimmune diseases.
  • The age-old practice of fasting has been demonstrated to play a significant role in health and healing. This includes the potential application in both cancer prevention and treatment.

Pain & Dysfunction

  • The age-old practice of Tai Chi has been shown to enhance cardiovascular function, muscular strength, balance, neuromuscular activity, and joint stability. In addition, it has been shown to improve self-efficacy, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction, resulting in reduced pain, improved function, and slow the disease progression and disability associated with osteoarthritis.
  • Listening to music can reduce chronic pain from a range of painful conditions, including osteoarthritis, disc problems and rheumatoid arthritis, by up to 21% and depression by 25%.
  • Black seed oil, applied topically 3 times per day for 3 weeks, outperforms oral paracetamol (Tylenol/Panadol) for reducing symptoms such as pain in people suffering from knee osteoarthritis. Aerobic exercise, aromatherapy, cannabinoids, Tai Chi, acupuncture, ginger, turmeric and arnica have also been shown to be equally beneficial in helping people to overcome pain and dysfunction.
  • Aerobic exercise effectively diminishes pain intensity and improves physical and psychological functioning of patients with chronic low back pain.
  • Removing the plant group ‘nightshades’ from your diet can substantially reduce pain and inflammation in chronic sufferers (IBS, Intestinal permeability, arthritis, lupus, rheumatism and other musculoskeletal pain disorders.) The nightshade list includes tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, okra, peppers of all kinds, goji berries, tomarillos, sorrel, huckleberry & blueberries, gooseberries, pepino melon, tobacco, paprika and cayenne pepper.

Mobility & Flexibility

  • Yes, it is possible to increase your hamstring length in just minutes!
  • Alleviating gut-related issues such as chronic inflammation, intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and dysbiosis, has the ability ‘unwind’ your nervous system and improve the tone of your muscles and fascia (connective tissues). In doing so, you may notice improvements in muscle length (calves, hamstrings, neck), and changes in functional tests such as touching your toes, squatting, and spinal movement.
  • It has been demonstrated clinically that changing to a whole-food diet that is full of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, berries, herbs and spices, and organic/free-range/biodynamic/wild-caught meats and seafoods can enhance mobility and flexibility throughout the body – Spinal movements improve and muscle length improves. And functional patterns such as squatting and lunging improve.
  • It is possible to improve ankle bending (dorsiflexion) by adjusting spinal segments at the top of the neck? If you have ‘subluxed’ spinal segments in your neck, these may be affecting movement around other joints in the body, including the ankle.
  • With the fast-paced modern lifestyle, many people experience a high degree of psycho-emotional stress. This stress can have real physiological implications on your body. By alleviating this build-up of stress and strain in your body, you can have a profound effect on how well you move. Whether this be improvements in walking, running, squatting, lunging, sports or work activities, these changes are significant and measurable. One fantastic method for enhancing overall health and mobility, is through specific breathing exercises.

Stability / Strength / Fitness / Power

  • Organs talk to muscles! You can strengthen your core stabilizing muscles (core strength) just by improving the health of your internal organs. All the Pilates exercises in the world won’t help to stabilize your pelvis and spine if you’re suffering from chronic inflammation or other gut-related disorders.
  • It is possible to get big muscles with less than 30 minutes of gym time per week.
  • It is possible to go from running 5km to 50km in just 12 weeks with the right training program and philosophy!
  • You add more than 50kg to your maximum deadlift in less than 2 months. And even more impressive, you can do this while adding less than 10% additional bodyweight. And here is the real fascinating part, these results can be achieved with less than 15 minutes of actual lifting time (time under tension) per week.
  • Want to learn to hold your breath longer than Houdini? His personal life-long record was 3 minutes and 30 seconds. The crazy part is that you can be trained to do this in just 15 minutes!

Performance

  • Is there really a medical mushroom in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that can help endurance athletes to break world records? Studies suggest that it can increase peak power by 17% in just 3 weeks.
  • There are techniques that you can learn very quickly that can enhance your memory almost instantly. Simply, you actively learn to use a larger portion of your brain. Not surprisingly, mindfulness practices (meditation, Tai Chi, Qigong, MBSR) along with enhancing sleep can also improve your ability to recall.
  • Why are some of the highest performing executives in the world improving their physical fitness? Greater fitness and an active lifestyle have been demonstrated to enhance functional brain connectivity, more efficient brain activity, and superior executive and memory function. Research in children has demonstrated similar results and leads to greater scholastic achievement.
  • Whether you are an athlete, mother, father, CEO, teacher or student, improving the amount (duration) and quality of your sleep will enhance your physical and cognitive performance. Eight hours of quality sleep can increase your ability to tackle complex problems by 50%.
  • Did you know that there are substances called Nootropics that can increase your brain’s performance helping you to remember more, learn better, concentrate more fully, and even increase your intelligence? These “smart drugs” are also neuroprotective meaning that they will actually protect your brain from injury. Magnesium, turmeric, B vitamins and choline are just a few of the Nootropics to consider.
  • Amazing to think that all of these foods can increase the production of milk in woman who are breastfeeding: Fennel seeds, Fenugreek seeds, spinach and beet leaves, garlic, carrots and carrot juice, water, asparagus, salmon, apricots, cumin seeds, basil leaves, sweet potato and almonds.
  • Crazy to think you can learn to speak a new language (with fluency) in just a few months! Of course, you must have the tools and tricks for faster learning.
