Eating to Support Your Metabolism

EATING TO SUPPORT YOUR METABOLISM

There is no one magic solution to send your metabolism into overdrive, but there are definitely a number of good ways to fuel your body’s furnace.

If you take fuelling your body seriously, you might also want to consider a DEXA scan. This will help you to understand just where you are starting from and can be used to reflect change over the course of time. A DEXA scan can provide detailed information about height, weight, estimated body fat percentage, distribution of that body fat, estimated amount of visceral (organ) fat, and relative muscle mass distribution.

Supporting your metabolism with the right food is the key to getting the best out of your body; here is a look at what should be on your shopping list.

Eat foods high in resistant starch

Some nutritionists suggest that foods which are high in resistant starch could be beneficial and offer you a unique kind of fibre.

Sweet potatoes and lentils are two items that are identified as being high in resistant starch, meaning that they’re not digested by your small intestine, allowing it to enter your large intestine whole, where it subsequently ferments.

This process helps to create beneficial fatty acids that have the ability to block your body’s ability to burn carbs. Instead, it uses stored body fat and recently consumed fat as fuel.

According to a 2015 study published in the Nutrition and Metabolism journal, replacing just over 5% of your total carb intake with resistant starch could increase your fat-burning potential after a meal by as much as 30%.

High resistant starch foods have nutrient-dense properties that will help keep hunger cravings at bay.

Keep your metabolism stoked

Although it’s important to understand that your metabolism is ruled by genetics to a certain extent, there are many foods you can consume to boost your body’s fat burning power and help stoke your metabolism.

Eggs are an easy starting point. Eggs are known to be rich in branched-chain amino acids and they are also brimming with vitamin D, cholesterol and protein, so include some recipes in your diet that make good use of the whole egg.

An iron deficiency can slow your metabolism rate, which is why eating between three or four portions of iron-rich foods like chicken, leafy green vegetables, beans, or seafood per day will help counteract any iron issues. Lean meat like poultry, red meat, and pork is a great source of iron.

Consume healthy fats

Many people think that eating high-fat foods will make them fat, however this isn’t necessarily the case. Consuming healthy fats, like coconut oil, avocados, butter, nuts, seeds, olives, and flax can actually be beneficial for your metabolism.

Cooking with coconut oil can give your metabolism a decent boost. Because the medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) found in coconut oil are metabolized differently in comparison to other fats, so your body can make use of the energy immediately, rather than being stored away as fat.
